VOTE FOR THE FUTURE OF CHINA CREEK!!!

As you may have already heard, China Creek skatepark, at Clark and Broadway, could be up for destruction. To recap, the City has been reconsidering the placement/existence of China Creek for the last year, but not much of this news has reached the skateboarding community. There have been a series of public meeting over the past few months, which we at Skate Spot just recently heard about, where 3 schemes were proposed to 'upgrade' the park, 2 of which included the complete removal of the bowls. The meetings were open to the public, with Parks Board members. There will be a VOTE, and if you would like to have your opinion counted, you should come out to to meeting, and BRING FRIENDS to support skateboarding.

The VOTE for China Creek is to be held Saturday, June 11th, 2005 at the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House.

This is a quote form the email from Michel Des Rochers, Park Planner:

"The Parks Board staff have prepared three basic options for the park... presented at a large public open house to be held in June...The community meeting will be held on":

WHEN: Saturday, June 11th, 2005
TIME: 11 am to 4pm
WHERE: Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House
800 East Broadway (corner of Prince Albert St)

"If you have any questions or comments, please contact Michel DesRochers by phone, fax or email. Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting.

previous NEWS FLASH>>>>> April 29.05

We here at the Skate Spot have just heard that China Creek skatepark, at Clark and Broadway, could be up for destruction, and possibly very soon. Apparently the City has been reconsidering the placement/existence of China Creek for the last year, but not much of this news has reached the skateboarding community. We attended a public meeting last week (Wednesday, April 27.05) where 3 schemes were proposed to 'upgrade' the park, 2 of which included the complete removal of the bowls. The meetings were open to the public, with Parks Board members, at the Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, at 800 East Broadway, (604.879.8208), but not very many skaters were in attendance, possibly because of the poor publicity of the event. If you want to have your say in keeping or even upgrading China Creek, you should come out to the next meeting and bring friends. The next meeting with the Parks Board will happen in the next 2 weeks, but the meeting time has yet to be announced. (Makes it hard to plan to lobby for keeping the park alive...) We will be in touch with the city over the following week, and will post the next meeting time on this page, as soon as we find out.

Or check the Parks Board site at:

The Parks Board at: 604.257.8400
or Parks Board Commissioner Lyndsay Poaps at: lyndsay_poaps@city.vancouver.bc.ca
or email: michel_desrochers@city.vancouver.bc.ca

The good news is that planner Desrochers and commissioner Poaps, along with fellow commissioners Al De Genova and Suzanne Anton, have been supportive of skate-related projects in the past.
